Dancers:
Tamika
Burks-Steeley was
born in Buffalo, New York. She earned her BA degree from Old Dominion University,
and is a graduate of the Governor’s School for the Arts.
She performed for the James Brown concert, the Umoja Festival, and Jamsfest
99. She teaches dance at Old Dominion University, Norfolk Academy, the Academy
of Dance and Gymnastics in Newport News, and has had her choreography commissioned
by the Governor’s School for the Arts. Tamika was the 2000-2001 recipient
of the Eva May Morris Gregory Scholarship in Dance at Old Dominion University.
She is a choreographer and dancer with the Old Dominion University Dance Theater
and also dances with Second Wind Dance Company.
Philip
Deal was the silver medallist at the 8th Concours
International de Danse de Paris in France and became the first American of
his age to medal in this prestigious competition. A native of Virginia Beach,
Philip trained intensively with the Kirov Academy of Ballet in Washington,
DC and toured with the Kirov Ballet of St. Petersburg, Russia, under Oleg
Vinogradov. He has performed with the Komische Oper Tanztheater in Berlin,
Second Wind
Dance Company in Virginia, and has toured throughout the USA and abroad in
both classical and modern dance genres. He directs his own company, The Philip
Deal Dance Project.
Meredith Fages was
born in Charleston, SC and traveled throughout the United States as the daughter
of a naval admiral. She graduated from Columbia College of Columbia University
in 1999 with Pre-Medical Concentration in English. Miss Fages has performed
with Virginia Ballet Theatre, Adams Company Dance, Eidolon Ballet in
Concert, and ViewPointe. She has been featured in the works
of such choreographers as Sir Frederick Ashton, George Balanchine, Lew Christensen,
Anthony Tudor, Mark Morris, Todd Rosenlieb, Donlin Foreman, Helen Heineman
and Ginger Thatcher. Miss Fages studies in New York with Nancy Bielski, david
Howard and at the Mark Morris Dance Center. She received her formative training
at the Joffrey Ballet School and the Governor's School for the Arts.
Ricardo
Meléndez is the former Artistic Director
for Ballets de San Juan in Puerto Rico, a company and school whose purpose
is to develop a
dance culture and audience in Puerto Rico, and to train Puerto Rican dancers,
choreographers, composers and designers. Mr. Meléndez holds a BA degree in
Dance Pedagogy from Butler University, Indiana and was awarded an MFA in Theatre
from Brooklyn College, New York where he also served as part of the Theater
Department’s faculty. In New York he danced with the Alvin Ailey Dance Ensemble,
Ballet Hispanico, and the Omega Dance Company, and before serving as director
for Ballets de San Juan, he danced with Calichi, the first professional modern
dance company Puerto Rico. He was also principal dancer and rehearsal director
for Dance Kaleidoscope in Indiana where he dedicated his efforts in developing
arts in education programs. He has also performed as an actor in the Oregon
Shakespeare Festival, the American Cabaret Theatre, Theatre 22 in New York
City, the HERE Festival, and MadDog Productions. Ricardo now teaches and choreographs
for Todd Rosenlieb Dance, and the theatre and dance departments of The Governor's
School for the Arts.
Jacqueline
Patch received her BFA in theater and performing arts from
Old Dominion University, and her MFA in dance performance from New
York University’s Tisch
School of the Arts. She has performed with the Second Avenue Dance
Company and Newsteps with the Mulberry Street Theater in New York,
as well as with
Kim Whittam and Company at New York City’s Cunningham Studio. Other
credits include Virginia Ballet Theatre, ODU’s Students in Motion,
and the Todi Music Fest as a principal dancer. She is a graduate of
The Governor’s School
for the Arts and is now on the GSA dance department faculty as well
as on the
faculty of the TRDance Center and Tidewater Community College. Jackie
regularly teaches for Young Audiences for Virginia.
Jennifer
Somers is originally from Randolph, Massachusetts. She began
her formal training at the age of seven with Russell Chambers at Chambers
Ballet Theatre in Randolph. Since then she has trained with the Boston
Ballet and
the Cape Ann Academy of Art and at Boston Ballet Theatre, Joffrey Ballet,
Southwest Ballet School, and with the Gus Giordano Jazz Dance Company.
She has performed
with the Lake Erie Ballet, Ballet Concerto in Fort Worth, Texas, and
with Virginia Ballet Theatre. She is a graduate from Mercyhurst College
with a BFA
in dance
and a minor in Dance Movement/Art Therapy. Jennifer also dances with
the Virginia Opera.
David
Sonné began
his formative training with Elbert Watson, Melody Ruffin-Ward and Patricia
Sorrell. He is a graduate of the Governor’s
School for the Arts and received a full scholarship to attend the Harid
Conservatory in Boca Raton, FL. He also received a full scholarship to
the School of American
Ballet in New York City where he studied with Peter Martins, Kay Mazzo,
Peter Boal and Jock Soto. He has performed with Carolina Ballet, Miami
Contemporary
Dance Company and Virginia Ballet Theatre. David is a springboard diving
instructor/lifeguard with Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation.
Jason Williams began his dance training at the Dance Theatre of Norfolk.
He currently studies at In the Spotlight School of Dance in New York City
and
is in the BA Dance program at Old Dominion University. He has performed with
Chamber Ballet, The Hurrah Players, the Miss Virginia Pageant and Second
Wind Dance Company.
Krista
Zomar trained
with Allison Burgwin for nine years before joining the Washington
Academy of Performing Arts in the Seattle area
under the directorship of Deborah Hadley. She joined the Nashville
Ballet Trainee Program in 1998 and danced with Virginia Ballet Theatre
from 2000-2004.
Krista
is on the faculty of the TRDance Center and The Governor’s School for
the Arts, as well as a regular teacher for Young Audiences of Virginia
and
dances with the Virginia Opera.
