About the Building
The TRDance Center is located at 325 Granby Street, directly across the street from the TCC Roper Performing Arts Center in vibrant downtown Norfolk. This historic building was originally built as a vaudeville theater in the 1920′s and later became a movie theater by the name of The Strand. A successful part of the “Broadway of the South” it was one of 13 theaters in the downtown Norfolk area.
In the 30′s the theater was converted to the legendary Hofheimer Shoe Store, a staple in downtown Norfolk and a destination for shoe shoppers from all around Hampton Roads. After the closing of Hofheimer’s the building remained vacant until 2005 when a community minded group of dance enthusiasts decided to transform it into the TRDance Center.
A full renovation created the only state of the art dance facility of its kind in Downtown Norfolk. Architect Burkhart Thomas Reed of Norfolk developed a multi-function plan for the 10,000 sq foot building that includes three large studios, dressing rooms, an ample foyer, plenty of public parking, and a studio theatre that seats up to 120 people.
